Many experts believe that outsourcing is an attractive temporary balance sheet move, with potentially devastating long-term implications if the association isn't more than skin deep. For example, when companies delegate manufacturing, and increasingly, R&D, to lower-cost countries, they can cut prices and present better product selections here in the US. But if all those dealings are superficial, it's only a matter of time before the parent companies start experiencing a backlash.
