Outsourcing Journalism

October 22, 2008

Journalism work has been outsourced to India for several years and the trend will increase in the current economic conditions. The print media is facing difficult time competing with online news, blogs, etc. The advertisement revenue coming to the print media is reduced year over year due to tough competition from web advertisements. For example Craigslist literally killed the classified advertisements revenue for all the major news papers in US. Similarly sites like monster.com, dice.com, Naukri.com stole the market share for job advertisements from the news papers.

Jobs like copy editing, proof reading, graphic design, page design, etc. are outsourced to India. Still many big news papers are slow to make the shift to use offshore outsource providers. Last year Thomson Reuters opened an office in Bangalore, India with editorial team and several journalists to write about financial earnings for US companies and this trend will accelerate in the coming years.

MediaNews Group CEO Dean Singleton told the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association that his company is exploring outsourcing for every aspect of their operations including the possibility of a single news desk for the company that could be located in offshore location.
