Green Cloud Outsourcing

April 16, 2009

I did not know that IT industry is putting as much carbon as the airline industry until I read the Hardvard Business Blog on cloud computing. As you all know cloud computing is the hottest topic in IT and with its promise of reducing IT infrastructure and their by reducing energy usage will definitevely appeal to all the businesses. Also President Obama administration with green initiative will further enforce the growth of green and cloud computing in US.

Like other businesses the green initiative will affect the outsourcing industry as well, already outsource vendors are rated based on their green compliance and environmental friendliness. Among the Indian based outsource vendors Wipro and HCL are in a good position to win customers with their green initiatives. Recently GreenPeace organization named Wirpo and HCL are the top green companies in India.

I have been researching about cloud computing and how it affects the offshore outsource industry to publish an article. I found that cloud computing will change how we design, build, deploy and maintain software applications. All the companies are getting into cloud computing niche based on their industry and market strengths by offering XaaS (X as a Service, substitute X for any of the following: Software, Hardware, Infrastructure, Storage, Platform, etc.). But I did not read any cloud computing strategies or news among the top Indian outsource vendors, TCS, InfoSys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL, and Tech Mahindra.

Among the top companies I think HCL is in a good position to use their green rating and their Remote infrastructure offering to gain market share in cloud computing. I do not know HCL’s strength in software architecture, design, etc, for the future cloud computing . But for IT infrastructure management side of cloud computing I am sure HCL will get a bigger market share in the near future.

    HI,
I agree with you that cloud computing will definitevely reduce the greenhouse gases. Check out the McKinsey article that discusses extensively about how IT industry is producing more and more greenhouse gases. Though this article suggests several ways IT can cut the greenhouse gases it didn’t mention about Cloud computing. I strongly feel that cloud computing will solve many problems now IT infrastructure industry is facing.

I read “It’s estimate that the world’s datacenters will produce more carbon in a year than the total electricity usage of 36 million homes” Hopefully cloud computing will make our planet greener

Got something to say?
