A new report out this week by global consultancy McKinsey & Co, Destination: China, A Perspective on the Offshoring and Outsourcing Industry maintains that while China has made tremendous leaps in terms of software development in recent years, it can’t realize its ambition of becoming the leading global offshore-outsourcing destination anytime soon, predict industry watchers. Out of a total of $80 billion worldwide revenues for providers of offshore services in business and technology, India leads by a wide margin, garnering $58 billion — a market share of over 70%. Notwithstanding the hype created over Legal Service Outsourcing (LPO), Value-Notes, a Pune-based consultancy in business intelligence and research recently published a survey of top US-Based law firms that revealed that nearly 50% haven’t heard about LPO; 36% think they do not require the service; 10% had tried and tested the model and did not find it suitable for their needs; while only a minuscule 4% declared they might use in near or distant future. In 2006, a series of amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure made it mandatory for companies to preserve and present electronically stored data for litigation purposes. KPMG estimates that first level document review costs anywhere between 58% and 90% of total litigation costs. In order to comply with the changed rules, US companies are working overtime to identify strategies to control and reduce these costs, thereby turning document review into a huge opportunity ($30 to $50 billion) for Indian LPO vendors.
